Description
Sword, shield, helmet, cape.
Checking off boxes as you don the hero's attire. You are preparing for a fight.
Mom says there is nothing in the shadows, but you know better. You’ve met the ghosts and spooks firsthand, wandering through the house and the garden.
You saw them when you were home alone.
When you couldn't sleep, watching the streetlights cast blue stripes across your room at night.
You know they hide from the adults.
You know only children can see them—when they reveal their long faces and burning eyes.
Mom says there is nothing in the shadows, but she can't see.
She forgot that she ever could.
You have to fight this one on your own.
Behind the Scenes
Story
The idea for Lionheart originated when one of my friends used the word in our group chat. It immediately struck me. I fell in love with the word, and even more with the feeling it evoked in me. It felt like fire, I knew this was a new artwork calling. During Christmas, the image slowly started sprouting in my head:
A brave child, with a Big Hero Cape (towel), standing against his fear, ready to fight.
Unsurprisingly, this child was me.
I have always been scared. Scared of demons, of the dark, of losing my parents, of being alone in the world.
Later, these fears transformed into more calculated "adult" fears and worries:
‣ Of being judged
‣ Of developing arthritis
‣ Of being a failure
‣ Of being alone in the world
These are still the exact same fears as when I was 6, now they are just coated in a different context, exaggerated for a dramatic effect (as if I needed more fear).
As for depicting FEAR, I did not want to make dragons or demons. I had something else in mind.Darkness.Its the darkness that keeps us awake at night. It's the darkness–the not knowing, what's so scary about life.We are scared of the dark, because we don't know what's in there.
Brave people inspire me.
They inspire me because they know what they have to do, and do it in spite of their fears.
Maybe this artwork wanted to show me that even I can be brave.
That I don't need to hide from the demons, and rather face them.
It is a funny coincidence that I have finished this exactly as I had quit my job and committed myself to the service of art once again.
Feels like a good omen, a good talisman for me to stand against my fears.
Just like this little Lionheart.
